Markthalle Basel
The second exhibition of the «Art on Sunday» series took place from October 23 to November 2, 2022. Zaide Kutay and Cécile Haesler were the featured artists.
About 50 people took part in the second vernissage of «Art on Sunday». We invited a DJ, who offered fantastic acoustic accompaniment, to help calm the environment. Everyone enjoyed the vegetarian cuisine as well. Also, the initial visitors expressed an interest in buying the images. There was also a lively debate between the guests and the two artists. The exhibition handouts are practical, as well as attractive and beneficial. Visitors are interested in taking one.
The exhibition of the artists’ diverse works was extremely well received by the audience.
The narrative in Zaide’s films are fascinating, and viewers remain seated to see everything. Many guests arrive in pairs. As a result, those who finished the video recommended it to their partner. Guests may also dive through Cécile’s countless illustrations and take their time looking at them. Cécile’s explanations of the many personalities might have you listening for hours.
In the meanwhile, we’ve seen a multicultural crowd speaking French, English, and German. The characters in Zaide’s videos speak and interact through sounds and gestures rather than using a specific language. Cécile’s drawn figures are often presented without words. The show therefore reaches the Markhalle’s international audience. It appeals to both youngsters and adults.
The show was seen by an average of 14 individuals every day, for a total of around 126 people.
The Kunstpalaver was conducted on Wednesday, October 26th, with Zaide Kutay and Cécile Haesler, to whom we welcomed the multi-talented artist / scenographer / designer Sophie Lardon. Dominik Mendelin, the art educator who is also in charge of fundraising at the Kunstraum Dock in Kleinbasel, also took part. Sophie is skilled in a variety of artistic styles. Dominik, like Christophe, Martha, and Cécile, is passionate about art mediation.
We explored personal careers and the urges that huge cities like Berlin, Paris, London, and Seoul might inspire in the second Kunstpalaver. Because of the high individual demands, the work of the participants is rarely explicitly autobiographical. Some periods of life, however, are subconsciously represented in the works themselves.
The storytelling is also a link connecting artists of many genres. This is most noticeable in pictures and animations, and less so in other genres, depending on the weighting. Consequently, autobiographical experiences affect the narrative of a work.
