Insights Peer to Peer

Together with Visarte Region Basel and the association Out & About, DOCK has launched “Peer to Peer” to give artists, students, and curators the opportunity to exchange ideas and network on the conditions of art production at studio talks.

One of the meetings took place with artist Bruno Steiner. Here he provides insights into current challenges and expectations for further exchange.

What challenge are you currently facing in your artistic work?

I am involved in self-organised artistic and cultural collectives on a voluntary basis.

In the last few months, and perhaps also since the COVID-19 pandemic, the processes of organisation and communication in these circles seem to have become more dynamic and more profound.

I am constantly trying to keep up my own artistic practice in addition to the socially important tasks and to keep a balance on the whole.

What do you think is currently lacking in the art world and what should change so that this is no longer the case?

I also see the fragile structures of independent art and cultural production in the very vibrant art world of Basel. I am enthusiastic about the interdisciplinary discourse on unconventional cultural and economic possibilities in order to involve other areas of the community as well.

What do you hope to gain from the next few months of Peer to Peer and the studio visits?

The collective exploration of taboo-free questions and difficulties in an artist’s inner life will hopefully lead to a number of clear formulations. As far as the art world is concerned, I am looking forward to encountering unexpected contexts and refreshing impulses.

Bruno Steiner, * Schwyz, is a multimedia artist. He studied for a Bachelor of Arts in Art/Media Art at the Lucerne School of Art and Design and then a Master of Arts in Animation at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. In his experimental works, he often documents everyday situations and realises them artistically. The dialogue in his painterly and audiovisual works reflects the mediation aspects that he also pursues in art and cultural-political networks. He has had a studio in Haus Oslo am Dreispitz in Basel / Münchenstein since 2011.
